Retirement Communities in the VA are really hot
The quality of northern
virgina assisted
living is ranked
right around dead center in multiple social services
reports. Retirement communities are ranked twenty fourth in
overall quality, accessibility, and cost. The vast majority
of retirement communities in the area have a wide range of
on site activities such as swimming and hiking and
naturally, golfing. The communities fit right into the
natural landscape that the Mid Atlantic is known for and
provides easy access to major highways but limited access to
public transportation.
Nursing home
facilities in the same area ranked a bit lower, coming
in at thirtieth in overall quality. Quality of care,
cleanliness, and categories of optimum health were all
evaluated by the department of social services. It was
determined that while very few examples of outright abuse
were found, multiple smaller violations of health code
standards were address and eventually rectified.
The socioeconomic locations for each facility were rather
distinct. Retirement communities were constructed in the upper
socioeconomic locations and marketed to those of higher class
while the nursing home facilities were constructed in lower
socioeconomic locations and marketed toward the middle and
lower classes. While this arrangement is certainly not unique
to any given geographical location, the current obvious class
boundaries in regular home construction draws attention to the
distinct differences.
Uniquely, the facilities that combine both retirement
communities and nursing homes were for the most part
constructed in neutral regions, particularly along the coast of
the Chesapeake Bay. Given the areas vast country side, the
development sites were chosen based on the likelihood of future
development rather than what has already been constructed. It
is speculated that this was done in an attempt to rule out
specific class distinctions in the newer development.
The two governing bodies of care and treatment of elderly
patients and clientele have been able to work together to put
together an accessible system of investigation and issue
resolution. The department of social services is responsible
for the basic overseeing and complaint resolution of all long
term care retirement residential providers. Nursing care
providers and nursing homes answer to The Office of Licensure
and Certification.
Both of these programs have come together under the committed
efforts of a volunteer organization known as The Long Term Care
Ombudsman in order to provide clients and patients with
significant access to assistance in maintaining a higher
standard of treatment and care. This volunteer organization is
aptly committed to protecting elderly rights, investigating and
settle complaints, and is even responsible for the training of
elderly care staff.
Developed in the early 1970’s, this program is now the backbone
of most long term care facilities. Since its inception there
have been numerous legislative mandates upgrading patient care
that The Long Term Care Ombudsman rallied behind all the way to
Washington. This program has developed most of today’s standard
protocol for the regions elder care.
The Long Term Care Ombudsman is easily
accessed by all clients and patients in long term care
facilities. Seniors are encouraged to call for issues
regarding their health and care whenever they feel their own
voice is no longer being heard. Naturally there are a
handful of seniors who call several times per day even if it
is only to complain that there was an unexpected menu change
or their families aren’t spending adequate time with them.
Regardless of the occasionally demanding nature of the
complaints, each one is handled to the absolute best of the
volunteers’ abilities. No complaint is ignored.
Long term care facilities have been pleased with the
overwhelming support received in assisting them to reach higher
levels of quality care. Volunteers regularly visit nursing
homes and retirement communities in an effort to bring the
standard of care to a high quality level, and having a liaison
between families, patients, and administration has proven
invaluable again and again.
Residential long term care facilities face numerous challenges
in an effort to provide care for aging individuals at a
reasonable cost. It can be difficult to progress without
raising the standard cost of care dramatically. Every effort is
being made to improve on quality without sacrificing the
financial ability to reside in these types of environments.
This of course is a difficult balance and requires a great deal
of careful implementation.
Providing quality care for seniors is a constant effort that
takes commitment and dedication. There is remarkable value in
having active and qualified volunteers to encourage these
facilities to make the possible improvements and provide staff
training to enhance the quality of care available. While most
states do have organizations to contribute to the quality of
senior care, few have organizations that are quite as active
and committed to every single senior concern. Organizations
such as these are making a tremendous difference in the lives
of senior citizens.
